COMMENTARY: Ending the modern-day slave trade | Religion News Service

Source:  Religion News Service

Within the Jewish community, efforts to combat trafficking date back to the early 1900s, when members of the National Council of Jewish Women, among others, met the boats of immigrants from Europe in order to protect young women from traffickers. Today, many are still engaged in today’s struggle to keep the vulnerable from traffickers, including mobilizing resources to spur the federal government to increase its focus on this scourge.

A Thailand-based women's group has recently produced a report that documents more than 100 cases of rape being used as a weapon of war, mainly in the northeast of the country against ethnic and religious minorities.

The Role of Sex Trafficking in H.I.V. - NYTimes.com

Source:  NYTimes.com

In the quest to end AIDS, the role of sex trafficking should not be ignored by the public health community – but until recently, it largely was. In India and Nepal, where much of the existing research has been conducted, young women are frequently lured away from their homes by acquaintances, distant relatives and strangers under the pretense of employment or marriage, and then are sold to a brothel owner.

Back Fighting Human Trafficking: The Role of the Private Sector

Source: CSR Asia

by Matt Friedman  matt.friedman@themekongclub.org

While most people think that human trafficking focuses primarily on women and girls being forced into the sex industry, this represents only about 25 percent of the total cases. The remaining 75 percent fall under the heading “forced labour.” Many of these victims are working in manufacturing supply chains, which begin at a grower or producer and end at a manufacturer or assembly plant, producing products purchased by consumers in the global retail market.
