'Be My Protector' event launched to stop scourge of human trafficking | theSundaily


SUBANG JAYA: A truck with emblazoned with the logo "Be My Protector" that aims to challenge Malaysians to stop human trafficking – by creating community intelligence, raising awareness and empowering them to act – will travel and dock in 16 locations in Subang Jaya, Damansara Utama and Kinrara including shopping malls, colleges and public areas starting from today until May 3.

Authorities worldwide are fighting human trafficking rings that exploit migrants and force young women into prostitution. The U.S. Justice Department estimates that one in four women trafficked in the United States passes through Houston, Texas, at some point because it is an international and domestic crossroads and a center of commerce. Most are from Asia or Latin America, but, as VOA’s Greg Flakus reports from Houston, some are U.S. citizens.

Why Does Modern Slavery Persist? | Nick Grono

Given that modern slavery in its various forms is prohibited under international law and in almost every country, why is it so widespread and pervasive?

The reason is that modern slavery thrives when three factors intersect. These are:

1. The demand for extremely cheap labour
2. Individual vulnerability and marginalization
3. Weak rule of law.

Over 300 Slaves Rescued From Indonesia Island After AP Investigation Into Forced Labor


The Burmese men were among hundreds of migrant workers revealed in an Associated Press investigation to have been lured or tricked into leaving their countries and forced into catching fish for consumers around the world, including the United States. In response to the AP's findings, Indonesian government officials visited the island village of Benjina on Friday and found brutal conditions, down to an "enforcer" paid to beat men up. They offered immediate evacuation.
