A Middle Tennessee physician is behind a newly formed nonprofit organization aimed at fighting the global sex trade.

Dr. Daniel Bercu of Lawrenceburg is founder of Franklin-based Doctors at War, which will work on projects focused at the intersection of health care and human trafficking.

According to the organization’s Web site, human trafficking is the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the world, with an estimated 27 million people trapped in slavery at the moment, more than half of them children.

Long-term health care ramifications include post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, depression and other mental health issues as well as physical health problems such as HIV, sexually-transmitted diseases, malnutrition and sterility.

Hundreds of doctors from about 20 countries are already involved, the organization said in a news release today. Interested volunteers should visit the Web site www.doctorsatwar.org or call 1-888-552-8927.
