Rudd, Yudhoyono agree to tackle human trafficking

Sydney, Mar 10 (Kyodo) Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and visiting Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono agreed today to work together to do more to stop human trafficking.

In a statement issued after their meeting in the Australian capital Canberra, the two leaders also agreed that the Australia-Indonesia relationship "has never been stronger" and committed themselves to holding both an annual leaders meeting as well as a joint foreign and defense ministers summit.

Human trafficking remains a central issue for the neighbours, with a recent spike in the number of asylum seekers traveling to Australia from mainly Indonesian ports.

The two countries have signed a new Implementation Framework for Cooperation to Combat People Smuggling and Trafficking in Persons.

The new framework proposes to "provide for enhanced cooperation on prevention and disruption of people smuggling ventures, border and immigration management and legal processes.
