PUTRAJAYA, Nov 18 (Bernama) -- The United States wants a closer cooperation with Malaysia in combating human trafficking, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.

He said the US conveyed the matter at a meeting between him and Ambassador At Large for Trafficking in Persons, Luis CdeBaca, here today.

"They have also asked me to visit the US next year to see how they handle the issue," he told reporters after the meeting.

Hishammuddin said however that there was a need to decide on several issues before any agreements could be inked between both countries, saying there should be a win-win situation for both.

CdeBaca described human trafficking as "a modern-day slavery" and pledged the US government's commitment to work with Malaysia "to end this practice where people are held in horrible conditions" either for labour or forced into prostitution.

He said that at the meeting today, they both discussed how both countries could work together to tackle the crime "which unfortunately occurs both in Malaysia and the US."

"We are very happy to be able to partner with the government of Malaysia in order to fight this crime. They have shown that they are in the forefront to combat this," he said.
