Zambians should be vigilant in the fight against human trafficking and forced labour by ensuring all matters of such nature are reported to the relevant authority in the quickest possible time, Kazungula District Commissioner Alfred Chifita has said.

Mr Chifita said the interest of the Government was to see to it that communities in Zambia were free of human trafficking and forced labour vices which hindered the social and economic growth of the nation.

He said the issues of internal human trafficking and forced labour were rife in Zambia but very few of such cases were reported hence the need to create awareness to curb the vice.

Mr Chifita was speaking at New Fairmount Hotel in Livingstone yesterday when he officially opened the four-day International Labour Organisation (ILO) capacity building workshop on human trafficking and forced labour for Kazungula district development coordinating committees (DDCCs).

The workshop, which was attended by several heads of Government departments from Kazungula district and other organisations from Livingstone, was aimed at building capacity and creating awareness in the DDCCs on human trafficking and forced labour.

"Human trafficking and forced labour are a global problem and have recently emerged as an issue in an increasingly globalised world.

"Trafficking occurs when a man, woman or child is recruited and taken from one community, country, or region to another by deception or coercion, by threat or abduction, for the purpose of their exploitation," Mr Chifita said.

In Zambia, evidence suggests most cross-border human trafficking and forced labour involves the trafficking of young men, women and children for the purposes of sexual or labour exploitation.
