WAM: UAE is making every effort to fight human trafficking crimes

Mar 8, 2011 - 06:58 - WAM Abu Dhabi, 8th March 2011 (WAM) -- The UAE has issued necessary legislations and joined international conventions as part of the its commitment to combating the crimes of human trafficking, a senior Ministry of Interior affirmed today at the opening sitting of the first GCC Forum on Combating Human Trafficking Crimes.

The two-day meeting is being held under the patronage of HH Lt.General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

Major General Khalifa Hareb Al Khaili, Assistant Interior Ministry Undersecretary for Resources and Support Services, told the event that the UAE had not only set up anti-human trafficking committees but also established Ewa Shelters to provide health, psychological, educational, social, legal assistance to the victims of human trafficking and secured all guarantees for safe repatriation of those victims to their homelands.

Al Khaili called for broadening scope of cooperation between the Ministry of Interior and the regional and international organisations, transfer of expertise and exchange of information.

He called on the participants to join forces to fight the international crime of human trafficking which he called a modern form of slavery and violation of the simple principles of human rights.

''This forum provides a good collaborative factor in the fight against the human trafficking which is considered today as a brutal international crime that causes headache to all given its human and social negative impact,' he added.

Bearing that in mind, he noted, the UN has issued a set of international conventions and legislations and taken a raft of preventive measures to fight the crime .

Colonel Hazza Al Hajeri, Assistant GCC Secretary General for Security, outlined the GCC's policies and efforts to fight the crime through review and updating of laws and legislations and accession to international conventions and protocols for combating human trafficking like the Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (Palermo Convention), a United Nations-sponsored multilateral treaty against transnational organized crime, adopted in 2000.

He also referred to the Abu Dhabi declaration for unified system to combating trafficking in persons.

''A creation of human right unit at the GCC secretariat general is yet another testimony of the group's interest in that issue,''he added.

Representatives from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the UN, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Interpol, Europol, EU,US and Serious Organised Crime Agency presented working papers and case-studies on the issue.

A senior US official gave a presentation on the State Department's annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report.
