Cook County prosecutors today will announce criminal charges in a year-long investigation into the trafficking of children and young women for sex by Chicago street gang members.
Operation "Little Girl Lost" was conducted jointly by the state's attorney's office, Chicago police and the Cook County sheriff's office with assistance from federal and other local agencies.
The charges, which will be announced at 2 p.m. Some of those charged are scheduled to appear before a judge late this morning.
The operation marks the first full use of the Illinois Safe Children's Act, which went into effect last year and allows law enforcement agencies to use court-ordered wiretaps in the investigation of human traffficking, prosecutors said.
