In the quest to end AIDS, the role of sex trafficking should not be
ignored by the public health community – but until recently, it largely
was. In India and Nepal, where much of the existing research has been
conducted, young women are frequently lured away from their homes by
acquaintances, distant relatives and strangers under the pretense of
employment or marriage, and then are sold to a brothel owner.
