News - Finance/ Labour: Labour broking is modern-day slavery: Payco

The Pan Africanist Youth Congress of Azania (Payco) has called on Parliament to ban and criminalise labour broking.

"We believe that labour broking is modern-day slavery that thrives on exploiting and robbing the working class in our society," said Payco president Kwame Ndebele in a statement on Thursday.

The organisation, a youth league of the Pan Africanist Congress, said it was not amused by the ruling ANC's "empty statements" on the matter.

"We have not seen decisive actions to fulfil the promises the party made before the general elections early this year.

'The ruling elite in President Jacob Zuma's administration are not genuine'
"The ruling elite in President Jacob Zuma's administration are not genuine nor committed to banning labour broking in this country," said Ndebele.

He said the ANC's parliamentarians and cabinet ministers only spoke about labour brokers when attending union meetings, not where it mattered most - in Parliament.

"Labour brokers reap where they did not sow and get paid without working, all at the expense of the poor exploited worker.

"We call on government to show goodwill and commitment by banning and ceasing to utilise services of labour brokers in all spheres of government, including parastatals and other state enterprises," he said.

He further called for the crafting of a special legislation to outlaw and criminalise labour broking.

"We call on government and the ruling party to apply the same urgency and precision they applied to get rid of the Scorpions when dealing with labour brokers," he said. - Sapa
