Craigslist is most commonly used to search for deals, find a job or connect with people. But not all of the online ads are promoting legal services. Some posts are used to solicit prostitution and child trafficking.
"I've heard there can be prostitutes on there," says Victoria Montano. She is planning for a wedding and is uses Craigslist to find deals. "You never know what you can find, so I pretty much check it every day," she says.
Tuesday, Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller joined with 16 other state in calling for Craigslist to get rid of the Adult Services section. "The problems are that the adult services portion is used for prostitution and for human trafficking- exploiting young people," says Miller.
Craigslist has agreed to stricter guidelines for its Adult Services ads. Posters are required to have a working phone number and pay a fee. The website also said it would screen the illegal ads, but Miller says it isn't working. "It's time for them to take this off and to not profit from it because it does cause so much harm and they are no able to control it," he says.
The 17 Attorneys General are waiting to hear Craigslist's response. Miller says while he hopes it doesn't come to it, he can't rule out the possibility of legal action if necessary.
People who search the online classified ads every day don't see the need to keep that part of Craigslist. "It's illegal to do that sort of thing so I think they should get rid of it," says Montano.
