The police boss, who was addressing the inauguration of the Brong-Ahafo Regional Anti-Human Trafficking Unit Abesim near Sunyani, pointed out that human trafficking, unlike the other crimes such as stealing and fraud, directly affects the health and the social-economic development of its victims, who are mainly women and children.
He said human trafficking impacts negatively on the economy, contributes to street children, unskilled labour, and above all, those engaged in prostitution contract all kinds of diseases including HIV/AIDS.
The Police Commander also noted that human trafficking was very exploitative, because children are trafficked and forced into all kinds of hazardous labour such as fishing, salt mining and, worst of all, young ladies are forced into prostitution.
'Our children who should be in school to acquire knowledge, and thus contribute meaningfully to building the nation, are trafficked and abused in several ways,' he said.
DCOP Charles Oteng therefore, noted that the police administration, with the collaboration of other security agencies, was determined to eliminate human trafficking from society.
He gave the assurance that the police would not relent in its efforts until trafficking in human beings is no more practiced in our society.
DCOP Charles Oteng commended UNICEF, the Ministry of Women and Children's Affairs (MOWAC), and other stakeholders for supporting the police to fight human trafficking in the country.
The Deputy Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, ACP Isaac Alex Quainoo, on his part, pointed out that even though human trafficking was not a predominant crime in the region, the setting up of the unit would step up the fight against the crime.
He said human trafficking was the number one enemy of the socio-economic development of any society, and that it robs children and victims of their education, good health, humanity and dignity, their futures, and sometimes their very lives.
ACP Alex Quainoo urged the public to support the police, by volunteering vital information that would lead to the arrest of perpetrators of human trafficking.
