Delhi High C ourt comes to rescue of Orissa tribal girls trafficked to city

New Delhi: The Delhi High court has ordered the city police to produce the three tribal girls, victims of communal violence, who were trafficked, sexually assaulted and sold in Delhi.

Acting on a habeaus corpus petition filed by Human Rights law Network, the Court immediately admitted the petition and issued notice to 11 out of 16 respondents. It further directed the Delhi Police to make all efforts to produce the trafficked girls and to take action on the complaint of one rescued girl, in which she has complained of being physically assaulted.

The tribal girls hailing from Orissa who happen to be victims of Kandhmal communal riots, were trafficked, tortured, sexually abused and sold in Delhi early last year. A joint rescue drive launched by a civil society group All India Christian Council and Human Rights Law Network resulted in freeing one minor girl but could not trace the other two young women. Complaints were made in this regard with the Delhi Police but seeing the insensitive attitude of police, HRLN brought this issue to the notice of Hon’ble Delhi High Court by way of a writ petition.

The rescued girl narrated the horrific stories of being trafficked, sold, forced to drink alcohol, molested and attempted rape. She further said that she was being employed as a domestic help since January 2010 and was made to work from dawn till midnight, with two chapattis for the whole day and leftover, if any, for dinner.

Representations made to Delhi Police fell on deaf years and the policemen kept on denying the role of traffickers. Seeing no hope from police, mothers of the girls approached the Delhi High Court which immediately admitted the petition and issued notices to respondents.

The case is still going on and the Court is strictly monitoring the progress.

Cultural event against human trafficking begins - The Times of India

VARANASI: A 13-day cultural programme organised by Gudia Sansthan, an organisation fighting against human trafficking and working for the cause of sex workers and their children, began on Darbhanga Ghat on Thursday afternoon.

Folk artistes from different places presented their performance on a stage created on a boat in the stream of the Ganga in front of the ghat. The Gudia Sansthan has been organising this programme as a campaign against human trafficking for the past many years. According to the organisers, folk artistes from Orissa, Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are taking part in the programme.

It is the music concert of the marginalised traditional artistes. People including foreigners assembled on the ghat to see their performance.

Orissa frames new policy to check human trafficking

Bhubaneswar, Dec 14 (PTI) Worried over increasing women and children trafficking from the state, the Orissa government today framed a comprehensive policy to prevention the crime.

The draft policy, prepared by Women and Child Development department and approved in cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, suggested setting up of Integrated Anti-Human Trafficking Units (AHTUs) at Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Rourkela, Berhampur and Sambalpur.

While Commissioner of Police would ensure setting up of AHTUs in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, Range IGPs at three other locations would have such units, chief secretary T K Mishra told reporters here after a cabinet meeting.

Each unit would be headed by a DSP rank officers, while one inspector, two assistant inspectors and six constables would be part of the unit, he said.
